what to say (and not say) during test season

I recently came across a letter written by a school principal to his students' parents. I thought it was worth sharing so I reposted it on Instagram πŸ’™ The backlash was.. unexpected πŸ˜… People got caught up on the grammar. On whether kids were being given an excuse to slack. On what the principal "really meant." And I get it... parents are wired to protect their kids. But while everyone was arguing in the comments, the actual message of that letter was getting completely buried. So here it is!!...

Hey! Guess what? Your kid isn't lazy. But their brain is reallllly full 🧠 And it's probably causing them to procrastinate. A lot... πŸ₯²πŸ˜… When teens are overstimulated - which is most of the time these days - the brain's ability to start tasks shuts down. Completely. That's why they can stand in the kitchen and somehow not see the dirty dish sitting two feet away. Why brushing their teeth requires three reminders πŸ˜† And why they look like this when they finally sit down to do homework: And it's...

This week, I get to do something I've been dreaming about for as long as I can remember πŸ₯Ή My first ever member-guest golf tournament. With my dad!! 🏌️ If you grew up in a golf family, you know what this means. It's not just a tournament. It's a tradition. It's the kind of thing you watch older guys do for years and think.. someday. Someday was last week for me! 😁 When my dad called me four or five months ago and asked if I wanted to play.. I had to take a second. Because it hit me harder than...

"Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry β€” all forms of fear β€” are caused by too much future, and not enough presence." β€” Eckhart Tolle I read that quote for the first time years ago and I haven't stopped thinking about it since 😌 Not only does it help me in every aspect of my life, but I see it every single week with the kids I work with! One of my students has been grinding through finals prep lately. The pressure was building and the spiral was starting πŸŒ€ Before it took over, she stopped...

Hey friend!! πŸ™‹β™‚οΈ I have a motivation tip for you this weekend if you have an unmotivated kid at home. Next time they're stuck, checked out, or procrastinating something important... Try using a different motivation fuel for them. Here's what I mean: There are two types of motivation and most of us only ever use one! The one we commonly use with teens (and fail) is Pull Motivation. Tony Robbins explains it as PULLING from a future reality that we desire to spark purpose and clarity. For...

I didn't find my people until college 😣 Genuinely thought something was wrong with me in middle school and high school. I thought I was social enough.. funny enough.. trying hard enough. But the friendships never felt like mine. I'd say I had acquaintances, but not real friends.. and that hurt πŸ’” I remember watching the popular kids who seemed to have it all figured out and thinking to myself.. why isn't that me? I was jealous of the the big friend group, the inside jokes, and the "easy"...

I got back from Mexico a week ago and I'm still processing it. 14 of us packed into a beach house in Cancun for 4 days πŸ˜„πŸ–οΈ Coaches, team members, spouses... the whole squad was there. People who had mostly only seen each other through a Zoom screen finally in the same room, eating every meal together, laughing too loud, and staying up way too late talking about life and work and everything in between. It's been a lifelong dream of mine to foster an environment and culture like this so writing...

Help Your Kid Manage Distractions πŸ•ΉπŸ“± Hey friends! From doom scrolling and YouTube videos to loud workspaces and live gaming with friends, distractions are everywhere. Everyone (including me!) gets sidetracked sometimes. The issue is when distraction becomes a habit. Once your kid starts grabbing their phone any time schoolwork feels hard, their brain learns: β€œEscape = relief.” And next time they hit friction, they repeat it πŸ” That’s how students end up stuck in the worst loop - either working...
